I've considered writing a blog for years now, but I was never certain that I had enough to say. Or wanted to say. Or should say in electronic form. I mean, who wants an electronic trail to their previous viewpoints and opinions? I did not.
But, here's the deal: Academia can be a hard trail to navigate. There are different kinds of universities, unclear expectations, publishing challenges, and (sometimes) politics to work through. And, it took me a long time and a lot of falls along the way to figure things out. I don't want you to trek blindly along that trail. I want to share what I have learned.
I have been faculty, Associate Dean, Interim Senior Associate Dean and a Department Chair. I have gone up for tenure (twice! more on that later), been promoted to Full Professor and mentored dozens and dozens of faculty and students. I'll share advice that I hope will be helpful. BUT, take it with a grain of salt. I have (probably) not been to YOUR university and I have not read your bylaws. Feel free and empowered to cross-check my advice with your mentors.
I will share tips on: job interviews, staying on track, valuing yourself and quality of life, getting tenure, applying for grants and more! I hope this is helpful.
cheers,
mo
